A DIY guide to ad automation, done right

Your ad platforms automate almost everything now.
Here is how to use that well.

Performance Max, Advantage+, auto-apply recommendations, automated bidding: all of it is generally good, and all of it works better once you know what it is doing and how to check its work. This site is a free set of guides for running your own ad account the way a smart DIY operator would: start wide when you do not have data yet, measure what actually happens, then take the reins on whatever needs a human hand.

The three-step arc this whole site follows

  • 01 Start wide Let Performance Max or Advantage+ run a fishing expedition when you have no data yet.
  • 02 Measure honestly Pull the reports that exist, check them against your own CRM or order numbers.
  • 03 Take the reins Once you know what is actually working, tighten what the algorithm left loose.

Not every account needs to leave step one. Some never should. The point is knowing which step you are on.

Why platform automation is generally good

Great for a fishing expedition

If you are new to an account, a product line, or a market and you honestly do not know where the demand is, Performance Max and Advantage+ are a legitimate way to get numbers flowing fast. You are trading precision for speed on purpose, and that is a fine trade when you have no baseline yet.

Measurement is what separates the winners

The operators who do well with automation are not the ones who avoid it. They are the ones who read the reports that exist, cross-check conversions against real orders, and notice when a channel stops earning its keep. The algorithm will not flag that for you. You have to look.

No invented benchmarks

Where we use a rule of thumb instead of a hard number, we say so and show the reasoning. We do not publish an industry-average figure we cannot source, and we do not dress up one result as a universal rate.
